The stone quarries
In the soil of Souppes-sur-Loing passes a limestone bank which has been exploited since Gallo-Roman times in the quarries of Souppes.
In the Middle Ages, all the major construction sites in the region (churches, castles and abbeys) used this stone, the geological name of which was “Limestone of Château-Landon”.
In the 19th century, large Parisian buildings were built with the stone from these quarries, and in particular the Sacré Coeur in Montmartre, the Arc de Triomphe, the Sorbonne, etc. The quarries allowed the city to flourish. Two companies still operate the stone bench today: SCSL (Société des Limaires de Souppes-sur-Loing) which produces aggregate and Les Carrières de Souppes which extracts blocks. Possibility of visiting the quarries. Information from the Tourist Office.
